Retail Theft
July 10, 2017

STATUS: ARRESTED

SUBJECT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AND ARRESTED

On July 4, 2017 at approximately 11:00 p.m., Champaign Police responded to a business in the 2400 block of N Prospect for a reported shoplifting. A male had attempted to steal almost $1000 worth of merchandise but was stopped outside the store by security. The male fled on foot and was not located.

The suspect is described as a white male, 20-30 years of age, 5’7 to 5’9” tall with a skinny build. He has blonde hair, a goatee, and was last seen wearing a white shirt and dark shorts.

Sexually Assault at Kaufman Lake
July 03, 2017

On June 27, 2017 at approximately 5:25 p.m., Champaign Police responded to Kaufman Lake, located at 2702 West Springfield, after receiving a report that an assault had just occurred. The on-scene investigation revealed a female victim had been physically and sexually assaulted by an unknown assailant just off the walking path.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 20’s, 5’8 to 5’9” with a thin build and medium brown complexion. The suspect was last seen wearing a black shirt and a pair of green lens sunglasses, as seen in the attached composite photo.

Armed Robbery in the 1200 Block of North Prospect
June 26, 2017

On June 12, 2017 at approximately 4:30 p.m., the suspect entered a business in the 1200 block of North Prospect and brandished a firearm. The suspect was a black male wearing a mask, 5’11, medium build, longsleeved white button down shirt, blue jeans, and ball cap. He tied up the employees and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect was seen driving the vehicle in attached photos.

Missing International Scholar
June 18, 2017

This week Champaign County Crime Stoppers and the University of Illinois Police Department are seeking assistance from the public regarding a missing person.

Yingying Zhang, a visiting scholar to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, was last seen on Friday, June 9, 2017, in Urbana, Illinois. Security cameras captured her getting into a car at the corner of West Clark Street and North Goodwin Avenue around 2:04 p.m. that day.

Zhang is a 26 year old Asian female, 5’4”, 110 lbs. with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a charcoal-colored baseball hat, a pink-and-white top, jeans, and white tennis shoes. She carried a black backpack. The suspect`s vehicle is described as a black Saturn Astra four-door hatchback. It appeared to be driven by a white male who circled the area prior to making contact with Zhang.

Multiple Reports of Gunfire in the 500 Block of East Eureka
June 12, 2017

On June 2, 2017 at approximately 6:14 PM, Champaign Police Officers responded to the 500 Block of E. Eureka St., after receiving multiple reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, police located a 24-year-old male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital, but died a short time later that same evening.

 

Champaign Police Detectives have continued investigation into this incident and developed information that led to the issuance of an arrest warrant. On June 5, a warrant for First Degree Murder was issued for Marquis T. Burnett, a 21-year-old male from Champaign. Bond on the warrant was set at $1,000,000.

 

On June 7, at approximately 5:23 PM, officers from the multi-jurisdictional Champaign County Street Crimes Task Force located Burnett in a vehicle near the 2100 block of N. Lincoln Ave. in Urbana. The vehicle was stopped and Burnett was taken into custody without incident.



Discharge of Fire Arm at Market Place Mall in Champaign
June 05, 2017

On May 29, 2017 at 9:06 p.m., the Champaign Police Department responded to Market Place Mall located at 2000 N Neil Street for the report of a gunshot being fired. Witnesses advised 12-15 subjects were gathered in the mall when an argument ensued. One victim received a head injury as a result of the confrontation, but fled the scene after a single gunshot was fired.

All involved subjects were described as black males and black females, late teens to mid-20s. The victim was described as a skinny black male with short hair. The suspects involved in the shooting were described as a slim black male, early 20s, average height with very short dreads. A second suspect was described as a black male, 6’ tall with a thicker build and short hair. Subjects were seen leaving the area in a black Chevy Impala and an older gold Pontiac.



Report of a Shoplifter at Circle K in Champaign

On May 21, 2017 at 1:17 a.m., Champaign Officers were dispatched to the Circle K at 1511 N Prospect in Champaign for the report of a shoplifter. A white male stole beer and then left in a tan Pontiac Grand Am with Illinois plate Q424878, which was found to have been stolen out of Bloomington, Illinois.

The suspect was described as a white male in his 50’s with gray hair, and was last seen wearing an orange shirt and blue jeans. There was a white female in the passenger seat of the stolen vehicle but there is no further description on her.

Report of a Shooting in the 900 Block of North Third Street in Champaign

On May 16, 2017 at 10:21 p.m., Champaign Officers were dispatched to the 900-block of N. Third Street for the report of a shooting. Several shots had been fired but luckily no individuals had been hit. During the incident two homes and numerous vehicles were damaged by bullets. A large group of people left the scene running southwest through the park



Burglaries to Motor Vehicles and Credit Card Frauds
May 15, 2017

On May 3-4 and May 8-9, 2017 two black males entered several unlocked vehicles and stole wallets, U.S. currency, and jewelry. Shortly after the burglaries the males used the stolen credit cards and made numerous purchases at local retail establishments totaling over $1500.

The suspects are both described as black males, thin, in their late teens to early 20s. The suspects were wearing ball caps and black or dark hooded sweatshirts and dark shoes. The males were wearing black or dark pants during some transactions and khaki or beige pants during other transactions.

Stolen Debit/Credit Card Numbers Produced into Cloned Cards for Unauthorized Purchases In Area Store
May 08, 2017

This week Champaign County Crime Stoppers and the Urbana Police Department would like the public’s assistance identifying two subjects who have used stolen debit/credit card numbers produced into cloned cards for unauthorized purchases at area stores. The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and Champaign Police Department have also taken multiple reports in which the same suspect has been identified from surveillance images. The male, in the red shirt, is the common suspect in all of these cases. He is believed to drive or haveaccess to a newer gray Infiniti QX60 SUV.

 

The accompanying photos are from April 9, 2017 at a grocery store in Urbana. A $200 gift card was purchased along with a few inexpensive items. The primary suspect appears to be Hispanic or a well-tanned white male, approximately 35 years old, with a muscular build, clean shaven with a 2” buzz haircut. It is possible they are not residents of Illinois or central Illinois. He may have been a guest at some area motel/hotels.

Shots Fired at Third and Washington in Champaign
May 01, 2017

On March 28, 2017 at 8:42 p.m., Champaign Police were dispatched to the area of Third/Washington for a report of shots fired. Shortly thereafter officers were notified a black male with a gunshot wound walked into Carle Hospital in Urbana. The victim received treatment for a single gunshot wound and was later released from the hospital.

The suspect is described as a dark skinned black male, 18-20 years old, 6’ tall and skinny. He was last seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and black pants.



Home Invasion in Champaign
April 24, 2017

On April 7, 2017 at 11:30 p.m., two black males armed with a handgun entered a home in the 1200-block of Gertrude Avenue in Champaign. The suspects demanded the home owner go through the residence with them as they rummaged through every room. The suspects then left with numerous items of property and the victim’s vehicle. The stolen vehicle has been recovered.

 

The suspects are both described as black males, 15-16 years of age, 5’10” and 150-160 lbs. Both males were wearing a black hat, black mask, and black shirt and pants.



Armed Robbery at Dotty's Slots in Champaign

On April 9, 2017 at 2:10 a.m., a male suspect entered Dotty’s Slots at 501 S Mattis Avenue in Champaign. The suspect brandished a handgun and stole an undisclosed amount of currency.

The suspect is described as a tall, thin black male in his 20’s wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and black pants.

Armed Robbery/Aggravated Battery at Circle K in Champaign

On April 1, 2017 at 5:43 a.m., a male suspect entered the Circle K at 2315 W Springfield in Champaign and threatened the clerk with a knife while demanding money. When the clerk refused to give the suspect money, the suspect threw a hot cup of coffee on the clerk before fleeing the scene.

The suspect is described as an older black male with black and gray hair, approximately 5’8” tall with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a dark blue hoodie with a white liner in the hood.

Residential Burglary in Urbana
April 03, 2017

On December 20, 2016 at 7:14 a.m., the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 1100-block of Eastern Ave in Urbana for a residential burglary. US Currency, vehicle and boat titles, and jewelry were stolen from the residence. Three to four individuals are suspected of committing the burglary and were possibly driving a pickup truck.



Armed Robbery at the Circle K in Urbana

On February 25, 2017 at 3:09 a.m., officers responded to the Circle K located at 507 W University in Urbana for the report of an armed robbery. Prior to officers arriving, the suspect had pointed a handgun at the cashier and commanded her to get onto the floor behind the counter where he proceeded to bind her hands behind her back. The suspect demanded the cashier tell him how to open the register, which the suspect then emptied before fleeing the gas station.

The suspect was described as a black male in his 20’s and is about 5’8” tall. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and had a black mask pulled over his face.

Burglary to a Motor Vehicle and Credit Card Fraud
March 20, 2017

On January 2, 2017 between 9:00 and 10:40 a.m., officers responded to a burglary to motor vehicle in the 2900- block of Crossing Court where they located the vehicle with a broken window. Stolen from the vehicle was a purse and its contents valued at over $1000. The credit cards from the purse were later used at Home Depot and Walgreens for merchandise totaling over $2200.

The suspect is described as a white female, 30-50 years old, 5’6”, 150 lbs with short blonde hair. She was last seen wearing a dark jacket and dark colored pants.

Robbery at Circle K in Champaign

SUBJECT IDENTIFIED AND ARRESTED

On February 23, 2017 at 2:05 a.m., a black male entered the Circle K located at 1301 S Neil Street, Champaign and demanded money. The male was armed with a tire iron which he concealed underneath a blanket. The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 30 years of age, 5’9”, 190 lbs, with a hoop earring in his right ear. He was last seen wearing a black ball cap, gray shirt, and black pants.

Aggravated Battery, Burglary and Criminal Damage
March 06, 2017

On March 12, 2016 at 11:00 p.m., two suspects entered the mall after hours and attempted to burglarize a business when they were interrupted by mall security. Both suspects began fighting the security officer and one suspect hit the security officer in the head multiple times with a small crowbar. Officers were able to apprehend one suspect on scene but the other suspect fled the area.

The two suspects have been identified and both have outstanding warrants. The male suspect who was arrested on scene is Terence A Brown, a black male, 52 years old, 5’10” and 180 lbs. He is wanted on a warrant for Failure to Appear for Aggravated Battery with Great Bodily Harm. The female suspect who fled the scene has been identified as Shawnta E Coleman, a black female, 31 years old, 5’4” and 170 lbs. She has a warrant for Retail Theft under another case with Champaign Police.

U of I Police Department Seeking Assistance From the Public Reguarding Credit Card Fraud
February 27, 2017

On December 16, 2016 at 12:42 p.m., a female entered Tech Zone located inside the Illini Union at 1401 West Green Street in Urbana and fraudulently used a credit card to purchase over $3,800.00 worth of merchandise.

The suspect is described as a black female, 5’6”, 190 lbs. with black and gold hair. She was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt and black sweatpants, and was carrying a multi-colored backpack.
